Currency exchange or trade site: which one for what

4 min readPoE 2

There are two ways to trade in Path of Exile 2, and new players tend to use whichever one they found first for everything. They are not competing tools — they are built for opposite kinds of thing, and picking the wrong one is where most of the frustration comes from.

The short version

Currency exchange — for anything interchangeable. One Divine Orb is exactly like any other Divine Orb, so there is nothing to inspect and nobody to talk to. You are trading a quantity, not an object.

Trade site — for anything unique. A rare item with a particular combination of modifiers exists once. Somebody has to look at it, decide it is the one, and agree a price for that specific thing.

If you can answer “how many” rather than “which one”, you want the exchange.

Why the exchange feels better and is not always right

The exchange is faster in the way that matters: you are not messaging a person who may be asleep, in a map, or no longer playing. That is a real advantage and it is why it eats more of the trading day every league.

But it only works because the things it trades are fungible. The moment what you are selling has an identity — this bow with these three modifiers — there is no order book to put it in. A market of one is not a market.

That is also why chasing a rare item on the exchange is a category error rather than bad luck.

Why only one of them has public data

This matters if you are wondering why our price pages show what they show.

The currency exchange publishes hourly digests through an endpoint Grinding Gear Games opened in July 2026: what traded, at what ratio, in what volume. It is public and documented, and reading it is a supported thing to do. Every number on this site comes from there.

The trade site has no such thing. Its API is undocumented and scraping it is against the terms of service, so we do not — and neither should any tool that wants to stay alive. This is a real limitation and worth saying plainly: prices here cover the exchange and nothing else. An item that changes hands only through the trade site will not appear, however often it sells.

So when a price page shows a dash for something you know people are buying, that is usually what happened — it trades, but not on the exchange, and not against Chaos.

Practical consequences

Check the exchange first for anything countable. Orbs, essences, catalysts, fragments — anything where the question is “how many”.

Expect the trade site for gear. That is what it is for, and no amount of waiting will make those items appear in an order book.

Price both against the same unit. The exchange reports against a base currency, and it is easy to compare a trade-site asking price in Divines against an exchange ratio in Exalted and conclude something wrong. The dashboard converts the whole table, which exists for exactly this.

Thin markets are noisy on both. Four trades a day produces a number that leaps around, and on the exchange you can at least see the volume next to it.

The one habit worth building

Look at the shape, not the number. A currency that moved 30% this week may have climbed steadily — which means something — or bounced once on a handful of trades, which means almost nothing.

Both are the same number in a list, and the sparkline on the dashboard is there to tell them apart. That habit is worth more than any particular price, because the price will be different tomorrow and the habit will not.
